  • 6th July 1553 - Edward dies - his death was kept secret for two days
  • 8th July 1553 - representatives summoned and forced to sign the devise for the new succession
  • 10th July 1553 - Lady Jane grey was taken to the tower and proclaimed queen against her
  • 11th July-Northumberland and his sons had unsuccessfully attempted with a small force to intercept Mary  
  • Lady Jane grey ruled for 9 days
  • Lady jane grey becoming queen was in Northumberlands best interest - if his daughter in law became queen he could continue to control the government through her since she was young and inexperienced and closely tied to him through marriage
  • Northumberland knew that if lady Jane grey became queen his son Guilford dudley would be king or atleast consort as they had got married two months prior
  • Northumberland and lady Jane grey were protestant and mary was catholic and he wanted to stop England from returning to catholicism under mary
  • Many people still believed that mary was the rightful heir by law
  • As soon as edward died mary fled to east anglia where she had land and loyal followers she declared herself queen and began raising an army- Northumberland tried to stop her but failed and on the 19th of Ju mary I officially proclaimed herself queen and Jane was arrested and imprisoned in the tower of London
