  • Changes to policing in modern britain:

  • Capital punishment was last used in 1964, and was completely abolished in 1998 because:
    • ideas about punishment had changed
    • controversial cases in the 1950's led people to question the use of capital punishment
  • Since 1907, prisoners have been released on probation, and put back in prison if they reoffend.
  • In 1948, hard labour and corporal punishment in prisons were abolished.
  • Borstals were set up in the early 1900's. They used work and education to try and stop young offenders from reoffending.
  • New types of punishment:
    • community service
    • house arrest / electronic tagging
  • In 1953, Derek Bentley was hanged for murder, depsite not being the one to shoot.
