Ionic bonding

• Ionic bonding - a chemical bond formed between two ions with opposite charges, attracted by electrostatic attraction
• Ion - a charged particle that has gained or lost electrons
• Properties of ionic compounds:

  • High melting and boiling points
  • Conduct electricity only when molten or dissolved ~ as ions are free to move and carry charge
  • Giant ionic lattice structure ~ electrostatic attraction acting in all directions
