  • describe one role of msps in parliment - debate
Debates take place when there is a particular topic scheduled for
discussion and debate on a weekly basis.
The MSPs can raise awareness of issues and give their view at this
time. They also debate proposals for new laws (Bills). MSPs meet in the debating chamber on Wednesday afternoon and
    all day Thursday.
For example, Kenneth Gibson has taken part in debates over Covid
    measures and vaccine passports.
  • describe one role of msps in parliment - question time
One role of MSPS in parliment is question time.
MSPs can ask questions to other MSPs and the government to find
out information or to try and challenge the government on issues
which matter to constituents. Every Thursday between 12:00 and 12:45, MSPs can scrutinise and ask the First Minister important questions on the work of her government at First Minister’s Question Time (FMQT).
For example, Kenneth Gibson asked the First Minister when the £60
million that was promised to renew play parks in Scotland would be
    given to councils.
  • describe one role of msps in parliment - Working in/Membership of a Committee
Most MSPs are members of at least one committee.
Committees conduct inquiries into specific topics within their area
and can then ask Parliament to consider their findings. They also scrutinise the work of government. MSPs spend all day Tuesday and Wednesday morning on committees.
For example, our MSP Kenneth Gibson is the Convenor of the
    Finance and Public Administration Committee.
