  One reason why women may be underrepresented could be

  due to sexism.

  Women may not get involved in politics because of the way

  they are treated. This is because the media are often more

  likely to focus on a woman’s looks rather than their ideas and

  this can be a big barrier to women’s participation.

  For example, it was reported by the Sunday Post that women

  are 2 to 3 times more likely to experience abuse online than

  men.

  Another reason why women may be underrepresented could

  be due to having a lack of role models.

  Politics has always been dominated by men, whilst women and

  girls have traditionally been told that their place is in the

  home. It can then be really off putting for women if they look

  at politics as a place that is not very friendly or welcoming to

  women.

  For example, there has only ever been 1 female First

  Minister and most other parties have been led by men.
