  • describe one feature of AMS - two votes
One feature of the additional member system is that voters get two votes. This means that the people of Scotland get to make two choices on who they would like to be represented by in the Scottish Parliament (constituency MSP and regional MSP). For example, the people in the Garnock area would vote in the Cunninghame
North constituency and the West Scotland region.
  • describe one feature of AMS - more proportional
One other feature of the additional member system is that the result is more proportional. This means that the number of seats in parliament the parties get is much closer to the number of votes they get. For example, in 2021 the Conservatives got around 23% of the vote and around 24% of the seats.
  • describe one feature of AMS - two types of MSP's

Another feature of the additional member system is that there are two types of MSPs. This means that MSPs in the Scottish Parliament are either constituency MSPs or regional MSPs – there are 129 in total. For example, Nicola Sturgeon represents her local area as she is a constituency MSP.
