  • What was the Birmingham Jewelry quarter like in the early 1900s?

It employed over 20,000 people in jewellery making, metalworking and hallmarking but a combination of foreign competition, reduced demand and the bombing of the area in the Blitz led to a sharp decline in the area’s fortunes.
  • What happened in the early 2000s to the Birmingham jewelry quarter?

Decline continued throughout the twentieth century and in spite of a small number of regeneration attempts, it was not until the early 2000s that large scale improvements began to be seen. Former warehouses and factories have been converted into loft-style apartments and townhouses, and more than 30 restaurants, bars and cafes have helped create a vibrant hub for young businesses and professionals.
