Controlling body temperature

• How does the thermoregulatory cntere receive impulses?


  Through temperature receptors in the skin
• What happens when the body temperature increases/decreases? 


  Temperature receptors dectect whn the body temp. is too high/too low

  Thermoregulatory centre receives information and triggers the effectors

  If temperature is too high sweat glands (effector) produce a response and body cools down

  If temperature is too low muscle (effector) produce a response and body warms up
• What happens when you are too hot?

  • Hairs lie flat
  • sweat is produced and evaporated from the skin
  • energy is transferred to the surroundings
  • blood vessels supplying the skin dilate
  • more blood flows close to the surface of the sking
  • Vasolidation
• what happens when you are too cold?

  • hairs stand up to trap and insulating layer of air
  • no sweat is produced
  • blood vessels supplyin skin capillaries constrict
  • to close off the skin`s blood supply
  • vasoconstriction
  • you start to shiver -> requires respiration which transfers some energy to warm the body
