Mitosis

Cards (7)

  • What is mitosis?

    • process of cell division in which a single cell divides into two identical daughter cells.
  • What is mitosis needed for?

    • Growth and repair of damages tissues
  • What are the stages of mitosis?

    • Prophase
    • Metaphase
    • Anaphase
    • Telophase
  • What happens in prophase?

    • Chromosomes condense , get shorter and wider
    • centrioles moves to opposite ends of poles of cell- dorms network of fibres called spindle
    • nuclear envelope breaks down and chromosomes lie free in cytoplasm
  • What happens in metaphase?

    • Chromosomes line up along equator of cell and become attached to spindle by their centromere
  • What happens in anaphase?

    • Centromere divide, separating each pair of sister chromatids
    • spindles contract to opposite poles of spindle- centromere first
    • makes chromatids appear V-shaped
  • What happens in telophase?

    • Chromatids reach opposite ends of poles on spindle
    • uncoil and become long and thin again- now chromosomes
    • nuclear envelope forms around each group of chromosomes
    • cytokinesis finishes in telophase
    • 2 genetically identical daughter cells
