Working Memory model - AO1

Cards (8)

  • What does working memory mean?
Short-term memory - mental space that is active when we temporarily store and manipulate information
  • What are the components of the working memory model?
    > Central executive
    > Phonological loop
    > Episodic buffer
    > Visuo-spatial sketch pad
  • What is the central executive?
    > Decides where information goes
    > Monitors other parts
    > Decides priority
    > Directs attention
  • What are the two parts of the phonological loop?

    articulatory loop and phonological store
  • What is the articulatory loop?

"Inner voice"- used to rehearse and store verbal information from the primary acoustic store.
  • What is the phonological store?

Stores the words you hear (inner ear). stores sounds for 1-2 seconds
  • What is the visuo-spatial sketch pad?

Stores visual and spatial data and manipulates mental images. It has a limited capacity and can work independently from the phonological loop. (A.K.A spacial awareness)
  • What is the episodic buffer?

Integrates acoustic, visual + spatial, time + sequencing and combines visual + phonological memories (basically an episode of all your memories)
