Reconstructive memory & schema (AO3) - Bartlett 1932

Cards (6)

  • What did Loftus et al find with regards to linking the schema and reconstructive memory?
    > Speed estimates of the same video clip of car accidents were different delending on the verb used
    > reconstructuve memory is often jnfluenced by schemas
    > supporting evidence
  • How is the theory reductionist?
    > isolates schemas as the main factor. Ignores concepts such as rehearsal
  • How is the theory credible?
    > more realistic than a lot of other research
    > more relevant to real life memory - doesn't use an artificial memory test
    > supporting evidence (Bartlett's War of the Ghosts)
  • How does this theory loose credibility?
Doesn't give scientific detail how memory is reconstructed in the brain, other theories provide evidence from brain scans
  • How is the theory important to society?
    > shouldn't convict someone based solely off a single eyewitness account.
  • How does this theory link to nature vs nurture?
Nurture - how schemas develop (socialisation)
Nature - doesn't explain biological evidence but it does create a balance to more nature focused theories of memory
