  • INSPECTOR>
    -Tells the story of Eva to show that everybody has responsibility, regardless of classes, highlighting the consequences of not taking responsibility and of exploiting others.
    -The inspector is a mouth piece for Priestley to convey his own socialist messages.
  • The Inspector is a CATALYST [voice of morality] for change and his message of socialist reform.
  • The Inspector is there to reveal the truth from the characters, but for the audience he is there to show that they are wrong in how they treat the lower classes IRL. - Reminds them that awful and cruel actions towards Eva led to her death and that is important as she is a microcosm for the working-class, which make up the force of the wealthy's riches.
  • PLAY: both ends and starts with the arrival of an inspector, creating a cyclical structure.
    This highlights the wrongs of capitalism and the need for socialism.
  • LIGHTING SHIFT WHEN HE ENTERS THE PLAY:

    BEGINS: "pink and intimate"
    ARRIVAL: "brighter and harder"
    • Reflects that there will be an interrogation and that truth will be revealed.
  • The inspector highlights that even if you have done something really bad you can still change and learn to respect. THIS evokes an inference to the Christian religion and how we must repent and seek salvation when we have sinned.
  • Priestley wants the audience to release that people should be like the younger generation and change because if you don't you will face the consequences.

  • Inspector is a socialist & knowledgeable - doesn't care of his reputation.
    • Priestley wanted the audience to learn for themselves.
