Mixtures

• Mixtures are made up of two or more elements which are NOT chemically combined
• when a substance becomes part of a mixture, its properties don't change.
• The substances in a mixture can beelements, compounds or both.
• Separating mixtures doesn't involve the formation of new substances.
• Different methods are used to separate mixtures depending on the type of substances they contain
• A pure substance contains only one element or compound.
• If an insoluble solid is mixed with a liquid, it can be separated from the liquid using filtration.
• Filtration works by passing the mixture through a filter funnel with filter paper. the particles of insoluble solid are too large to pass through these holes.

  This means that they get trapped in the filter paper.
• A soluble solid can be separated from a solution using crystallisation.
