Earth and rocks

Cards (15)

  • earths structure
sphere with a layered structure. Crust - the thinest outer layer of solid rock, mantle- mostly solid but deep down can flow very slow like liquid. inner and outer core - made of iron and nickel.
  • earths structure 2
The earths structure is made up or tectonic plates. Like big rafts that float on the mantle. they move very slowly like a cm a year, sometimes suddenly causing an earthquake, happeneing when tectonic plates meet
  • igneous rocks
formed from magma pushed up to the surface of the crust. They contain various minerals in randomly arranged interlocking crystals. The size depends on the speed of the cooling. Type types of igneous, extrusive and intrusive. Example- basalt is extrusive and granite is intrusive.
  • sedimentary rocks
formed from layers of sediment laid down in lakes or seas over millions of years. the layers are cemented together by other minerals. fossils can form in these sediments.
  • fossil
These are long dead remains of plants and animals
  • Metamorphic rocks
These are the result of heat and increased pressure acting on existing rocks over long periods or time. They may have really tiny crystals and some layers
  • weathering
breaking down rocks into smaller bits. there are a few different ways this can happen. chemical, biological and physical weathering
  • erosion
    wearing down rocks
  • transportation
moving the eroded bits of rock round the world by wind and water
  • deposition
    laying down of water
  • cementation
squeezing and compressing the layers , eventually forming into sedimentary rocks
  • the carbon cycle
photosynthesis removes carbon dioxide from the air. carbon is passed along the food chain when animals feed. respiration and combustion return carbon dioxide to the air.
  • Rock cycle diagram
