Year 9 - Pressure

Cards (17)

  • Pressure = force ÷ area
  • Mass = the amount of stuff in an object, measures in kilograms (kg)
  • Weight = the force of gravity on an object, measured in newtons (N)
  • Friction, air resistance, water resistance are examples of forces that act on an object.
  • Area = force ÷ pressure
  • Force = Pressure x Area
  • Area = Force ÷ _
  • Pressure = _ ÷ Area
  • _ = Force ÷ Area
  • Fluid = A substance that has no fixed shape
  • What causes atmospheric pressure?
The weight of air above a surface
  • Why does atmospheric pressure decrease as height above sea level increases?
As height of sea level increases, the weight of air above an object decreases so the atmospheric pressure decreases
  • Pressure in liquids increases with depth due to the weight of the liquid above
  • Water pressure comes from all directions.
  • When an object is in water, the water pressure pushing upwards at the bottom of the object is greater than the water pressure pushing downwards at the top of the object.
  • This causes an overall upwards force, which is called upthrust.
  • An object will sink until the upthrust is equal to its weight, and then the object will float.
