Negatives of the voting system

Cards (6)

  • Winner's bonus
The system exaggerates the support received by the most popular party
They receive a greater proportion of seats than their proportion of the vote
  • Wasted votes
First Past the Post system means any vote for a losing candidate are discarded
  • Unrepresentative
Differences in the concentration of support mean that a party can have far fewer seats than their proportion of the vote
  • Example of the voting system being unrepresentative
2019 general election Liberal Democrats won 11 seats with 11.5% of the vote while SNP won 48 seats with only 3.9% of the vote
  • Safe seats
Some constituencies always vote the same way so some voters see the election as pointless
  • Minority constitutions
An MP can win the most votes while still being voted in by a minority of their constituency
