• What happens if there's too little water in the mucus?

  1. The Cl- will move across the basal membrane from the tissue fluid into the epithelial cell via active transport, down the concentration gradient.
  2. The Cl- will move across the apical membrane via CFTR channel from the epithelial cell to the mucus via facilitated diffusion.
  3. The Na+ will electrochemically diffuse between the epithelial cells from the tissue fluid to the mucus
