  • Causes
    As a result of the 1859 Colorado gold rush, prospectors began to hunt for gold on the land of Cheyenne
    The tribes signed the treaty of fort wise in 1861 agreeing to move into reservations. however many of their warriors called dog soliders refused to accept the treaty and often fought with prospectors
  • events
    in 1864 a cheif called black kettle set up camp at sand creek Colorado in preparation for peace talks with the Government
    colonel Chivington attacked black kettles camp.
    he and his men killed 130 natives including women and children even though they surrendered.took their bodies as trophies
  • consequences
    black kettles told other tribes about what had happened
    dog soliders attacked settlers in retaliation
    Government agreed to give them a bigger reservation and pay victims compensation. they went back on their promise
    black kettle was killed in another conflict in 1868
