Cell membrane

Cards (5)

  • Cell surface membrane function
    • Act as a barrier between the cell and its environment: controls what substances enter or leave cell
    • Partially permeable: let some molecules through
    • Substances can move across the cell surface membrane by diffusion and osmosis or active transport.
    • Sometimes called the plasma membrane
  • membranes within cells function
    • divide the cell into different compartments, act as a barrier between organelle and cytoplasm.
    • Partially permeable: control what substances enter and leave organelle.
  • Whats the function of channel proteins and carrier proteins?
Allow large molecules and ions to pass through the membrane
  • Whats the function of Receptor proteins?
allows cell to detect chemicals released from other cells, the chemicals signal to the cell to respond a certain way.
  • What’s cholesterols function?
    • Gives the membrane stability,
    • binds to hydrophobic tail of phospholipids making membrane less fluid and rigid. Helps to maintain the shape of animal cells. Has hydrophobic regions, its able to create a further barrier to polar substances
