Nature vs nurture

• What is meant by the nature and nurture debate?

  • behaviour is governed by nature (e.g. genes) and by nurture (e.g. environment and experiences)
  • it discusses how both factors influence behaviour
• the nature and nurture debate takes an interactionist approach to explaining behvaiour
• How can you determine if a trait is hereditable?

  • correlation study e.g. concordance rates
  • if the concordance rate is lower than genetic relatedness then nature has an influence
