Biological approach AO3

Cards (3)

  • strength - uses nomothetic methods - lab experiments and scientific scans such as PET and fMRI - research has to be objective and easily replicated - good at explaining human behaviour and is unbiased
  • strength - RLA - explains how people develop mental health issues such as depression, OCD - led to psychoactive treatments. e.g., ocd and candidate genes - with the development of SSRIs, sufferers are able to manage their condition and live a relatively normal life, rather than remain in hospital - helped us understand behaviour and has had a positive impact on society
  • weakness - hard determinism - argue we have no free will and all behaviour and thinking is due to internal factors such as the brain/genes - creates socially sensitive research such as finding a criminal gene. will lead to problems for society - cannot explain human behaviour alone
