Psychodynamic approach AO3

Cards (4)

  • strength - little Han's had a fear of horses as the horse looked similar to his dad with reins as glasses and dark hair - supports the psychosexual stages as it shows that children do go through the phallic stage - suggests Freud's theory is good at explaining human behaviour - HOWEVER case study
  • strength - RLA - led to treatment such as dream analysis and psychoanalysis which explores unconscious thoughts and emotions to understand how they influence behaviour and mental processes - helped to improve peoples mental health and 'cure' abnormalities -Freud's theory is good at explaining human behaviour as it has helped to treat behaviour
  • weakness - many concepts are unfalsifiable - Freud has many untestable concepts that can't be physically observed like the ID, Ego and Superego - Karl Popper argues that this makes Freud theory non-scientific (pseudoscience) as it cannot be falsified as we can't see or measure these concepts - is not good at explaining human behaviour as it is not scientific
  • weakness - Freud heavily relied on case studies - studied little Hans, rat man and other cases - makes universal conclusions based on human behaviour based on these case studies of people who are psychologically abnormal - not good at explaining human behaviour as the research support is not valid
