  ○ “Afferent” = to go inward

  ○ Nerve fibers that carry information TO the CNS from sensory receptors
• ● Sensory (afferent) division

  ○ 2 nerve fibers: somatic sensory fibers and visceral sensory fibers
• SOMATIC SENSORY FIBERS

  • carry information from the skin, skeletal muscles, and joints

  VISCERAL SENSORY FIBERS

  • carry information from visceral organs
• ● Motor (efferent) division

  ○ “Efferent” = exit

  ○ Nerve fibers that carry impulses AWAY FROM the CNS organs to effector organs (muscles and glands)

  ○ 2 subdivisions: somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system
• SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • “Voluntary nervous system”
  • Allows us to consciously (voluntarily) control skeletal muscles

  AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

  • “Involuntary nervous system”
  • Automatically controls smooth and cardiac muscles and glands
  • Two parts: sympathetic and parasympathetic
