L1.1.3.2.5: Types Based on Structure

Cards (5)

  • TYPES BASED ON STRUCTURE ● Multipolar neurons
    Bipolar neuron
    Unipolar neuron
  • TYPES BASED ON STRUCTURE
    ● Based on the number of processes extending from the cell body
  • ● Multipolar neurons
Many extensions from the cell body
    ○ Most common type because all motor and interneurons are multipolar
  • ● Bipolar neuron
    One axon and one dendrite
    ○ Located in special sense organs like nose and eye
    Rare in adults
  • ● Unipolar neuron
    ○ Have a short single process leaving the cell body
    ○ Very short and divides almost immediately into proximal (central) and distal (peripheral) processes
    ○ Sensory neurons found in PNS ganglia
    ○ Conduct impulses both TOWARD and AWAY from the cell body
