  ● Most inferior part of the brain stem that merges into the spinal cord without any obvious change in structure

  ● Area where pyramidal tracts cross over to the opposite side

  ● MAIN RESPIRATORY CENTER ● 4th ventricle lies posterior to pons and medulla
• MEDULLA OBLONGATA

  ● Contains important centers that control:

  ○ Heart rate

  ○ Blood pressure

  ○ Breathing

  ○ Swallowing

  ○ Vomiting
