● CEREBROVASCULAR ACCIDENT (CVA) —
strokes
○
2nd
leading cause of death and
3rd
leading cause of disability worldwide
○ Occur when
blood
circulation
to a brain area is
blocked
resulting to the death of vital brain tissues
○ The severity of impairment depends on the location of the stroke and how much damage occurred as a result

BRAIN
LESIONS
● Damage to the brain tissue because of other causes
● Can cause marked changes in a person’s disposition (like having sunny to foul personality)
● In such cases, a tumor or CVA might be suspected
APHASIA
● Common result of damage to the left cerebral hemisphere where language areas are located
● Most common type:
motor
aphasia
and
sensory
aphasia
TRANSIENT
ISCHEMIC
ATTACK
(TIA)
● Temporary brain ischemia or restricted blood flow (because not all strokes are completed)
● Last from 5 to 50 minutes
● Temporary symptoms: numbness, paralysis, impaired speech
HEMIPLEGIA
● One-sided paralysis
● The damage on one side indicates that the motor cortex of the opposite side is most likely involved
