L2.3.2: Hypothalamus

Cards (2)

  • HYPOTHALAMUS
    ● Location: sits directly above the brainstem
    ● Relationship with the ANTERIOR PITUITARY GLAND
    ○ Hypothalamus produces releasing-hormones and inhibiting-hormones
    ■ These hormones are released into portal circulation which connects hypothalamus to anterior pituitary
    ■ These hormones control the release of anterior pituitary hormones
  • HYPOTHALAMUS
    ● Relationship with the POSTERIOR PITUITARY GLAND
    ○ Hypothalamus makes 2 hormones: oxytocin and antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
    ■ Carried to posterior pituitary via neurosecretory cells for storage
    ■ Released in response to nerve impulses from hypothalamus
