  • Diabetes mellitus
    ■ Means that something sweet (“mel” = honey) is passing through or siphoning (Greek “siphon” = diabetes) from the body
    ■ Blood glucose level that’s normally 80 to 120 mg per 100 ml of blood rises to dramatically high level
    ■ Glucose begins to spill into the urine because the kidney tubule cells cannot reabsorb if fast enough
    ■ As glucose flushes from the body, water follows, leading to dehydration
