Competitive vs non-competitive inhibitors

Cards (3)

  • Describe competitive inhibitors?

    • Competitive inhibitors bind to the active site of the enzymes blocking the substrate from binding- the inhibitors competes with the substrate for the enzyme's active site
  • How can the effect of the competitive inhibitors be reduced?
The effect of a competitive inhibitor can be reduced by increasing the concentration of substrate. If there is way more substrate molecules compared to inhibitor then the substrate is more likely to collide with the enzyme's active site
  • Describe non-competitive inhibitors?

    • Non-competitive inhibitors binds to a site away from the enzyme's active site, this region is known as its allosteric site
    • The effect of non-competitive inhibitors cannot be reduced by increasing the substrate concentration
