Sugars: Dissacharides

Cards (5)

    • When two monosaccharides join via a condensation reaction, a disacccharide is formed.
    • These monosaccharides are joined together by condensation reaction.
    • Examples of disaccharides are;
    glucose + glucose= maltose
    glucose + fructose= sucrose
    glucose + galactose= lactose
  • A glycosidic bond forms between the two monosaccharides as a molecule of water is released.
  • Functions of disaccharides include; Sucrose is a common table sugar, Lactose is a sugar found in milk, Lactose intolerance is a common problem where the body is unable to digest lactose.
