Knowledge of circadianrhythms has given us a betterunderstanding of the adverseconsequences if they are disrupted
e.g. Boivin et a. (1966) - night workersengaging in shift work experience a period of reducedconcentration around 6 amresulting in more mistakes and accidents
e.g. Knutsson (2003) - a relationship found betweenshiftwork and poor health - shift workers are 3x more likely to developheart disease
May have economicimplications of how to bestmanageworkerproductivity
Strength = practical application to drug treatments
Chronotherapeutics - the study of how timingsaffectsdrugtreatments
There are certainpeak times during the day or night when drugs are likely to be at their mosteffective
Has led to the development of guidelines to do with the timing of drugdosing for a wholerange of medications e.g. anticancer, anti-epileptic etc.
Limitation = poor control in studies
In mostearlyresearch studies of circadian rhythmsparticipants were isolated from variables that mightaffect their circadianrhythm, such as clocks, radios etc.
But they were notisolated from artificial light as it was believedartificiallightwouldn'taffect their circadianrhythms
Researcher suggests this may not be true - participants'circadianrhythms down to 22 hours and up to 28 hours using dimartificiallighting alone
Earlystudies may have been confounded by artificiallight
Limitation = use of case studies and small samples
Studies of the sleep/ wakecycle tend to involvesmallgroups or studies of single individuals
May not be representative of widerpopulation
In Siffre's most recentcave study he observed, at the age of 60, that his interna clock ticked much moreslowly than when he was a youngman
Illustrates that even when the sameperson is involved there are factors that vary which may preventgeneralconclusions being drawn
Limitation = Individual differences
Cyclelength: research has found that circadiancycles can vary from 13 to 65hours
Cycleonset: Individualsappear to be innatelydifferent in terms of when their circadianrhythmsreach their peak
This explains why somepeopleprefer to riseearly and go to bedearly, whereasothersprefer the opposite
