  • CANCER
    ● A generic term for a large group of diseases that can affect any part of the body.
    ● There are 10 million deaths in 2020
  • CANCER
    ● Synonyms:
    Tumors
    ■ usually solid
    ■ cystic, either benign or malignant
    Diffused tumor – non-solid tumor (i.e., leukemia)
    Neoplasms
    ■ Neo - new; plasms - growth
    ● That does not resemble the parent cell.
  • CANCER
    ● Characterized by uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells.
    Invasion
    ○ Cancer cells grip the nearby cells causing them to perform abnormal functions inside the body.
    Metastasis
    ○ Once they convert nearby cells into performing abnormal functions, they continue to affect the nearby cells causing them to be abnormal as well.
  • CANCER
    ● Abnormal cells are capable of converting the nearby cell into abnormal cells as well
    ○ It does not resemble the parent cell – a defining characteristic
    ■ Cells that deviate from typical structure, function, or behavior of healthy cells
➔ Causes: genetic mutations, environmental factors, hormonal factors, etc.
    ■ Cells continue to divide and multiply without restraint (unchecked proliferation)
➔ May have the ability to invade nearby tissues or spread to distant sites in the body
  • EXCESSIVE PROLIFERATION OF CELLS
    Proliferation
    ○ Refers to an increase in number
    ○ When abnormal cells increase, they cannot perform expected physiologic activities since what governs them is a different form of origin
  • EXCESSIVE PROLIFERATION OF CELLS
    Progressive
Not localized; not inhibited in terms of their activity
    ○ They can keep on converting other cells into becoming abnormal until all essential functions are compromised
  • EXCESSIVE PROLIFERATION OF CELLS
    ● Results
    1. Invasion
    2. Metastasis
    3. Compromised Organ function
    4. Systemic Effects
    5. Death
    6. Tumor Formation
  • FORMATION OF HUGE MASS – TUMOR
    Benign Tumor
    Malignant Tumor
    ○ Capable of undergoing metastasis
    ○ Capable of converting other nearby structures to become abnormal
