• in 1962 the supreme court ordered the university of Mississippi to accept black student james meredith
• the state governor and university officials physically stopped james from registering
• 500 federal officials arrived to help meredith they were attacked by a mob of over 3000 leading to violence breaking out
• jfk stopped the rioting by sending federal troops to guard and protect meredith where he finally allowed to register
