• Took up the position of the Global policeman
• During Britain's Imperial century (1815 - 1914), it had 10m miles ^2 of territory and roughly 400m people were added to the Empire
• Royal Navy controlled most of the key maritime trade routes
• Navigations Act of 1651 meant only English or Colonial ships could be used for Colonial trade
• Religion and British culture (e.g. Cricket) and language introduced to Colonies
• Colonialism justified as they were ordered to by God. Seen in Rule Britannia
