• How does speciation occur?

  1. A population becomes geographically isolated from the original population
  2. There are different environmental conditions for the new population
  3. Mutations may occur, creating variation in the new population
  4. Natural selection occurs, where the best adapted survive and reproduce
  5. The new population eventually changes to the point where it can no longer interbreed with the old population
  6. Speciation has occured

• Wallace noticed that closely related species were often separated by geographical barriers.
