    • nouns are naming words
    • concrete nouns name objects (eg chair, mountains)
    • abstract nouns name ideas and feelings (eg love, suspicion)
    • proper nouns have capital letters and name individual people, places days of the week/ months etc
    • adjectives describe nouns (eg "the RED house")
    • verbs are doing, feeling and being words (eg she walked)
    • adverbs describe verbs; telling us how something is done (eg she spoke SLOWLY )
    • onomatopoeia is the use of words which sound like their meaning
    • alliteration is the use of a series of words starting with the same sound
    • similes compare one thing to another directly, using 'like' or 'as'
    • metaphors imply a comparison - written as if it was something else
    • personification makes a thing idea or feeling into a person
    • pathetic fallacy is giving an object human features.
