  • more people were able to read and write so more ideas could be spread more easily
• printing press:

  • the printing press spread quickly throughout Europe
  • it allowed information to be spread accurately and quickly
  • less inconsistencies were found in text as it was no longer copied by hand
  • it stopped the Church from controlling what was published in books
  • so, more subjects were written about, rather than the majority of books being on religious topcis
  • the Church was no longer to prevent ideas they disapproved of from being published
  • physicians could now publish works criticising Galen
• the work of Royal Society:

  • the Royal Society wanted to find new scientific discoveries through experimentation and evidence
  • this went against the idea of studying through just books
• • the Royal Society publsihed their own scientific journal
  • the journal depicted summaries and accounts of experiments of European scientists
  • this contributed to the spread of medical ideas
  • the Society offered funding for translations of European texts which allowed for it to be more accessible for everyone
  • they also placed copies of submissions in a reference library for everyone to study from
  • therefore, the Royal Society was influential in the development of new medical ideas
• • development was made in the Renaissance, however, the same cures and treatments were used from the medieval period
  • this is because even though people were learning to read and write, the majority of people still couldn't
  • so, developments like the printing press and the Royal Society, could only impact a small part of society
