• dxf stands for Direct Exchange Format
• An advantage of dxf is that they include the layer function allowing different sections of a drawing to be edited/displayed as necessary
• DXF files are commonly used to in 2D manufacture such as plasma cutting and laser cutting
• Developed by Autodesk and used for CAD vector image files
• Similar to dwg but more compatible with programs since its text based
• Its a universal format so documents can be opened easier with many programs
