Evolution theories

Cards (4)

  • Lamarck theorised that when a characteristic is regularly used, it becomes more developed. This strengthened characteristic is then passed on to the offspring.
  • Lamarck's theory was incorrect because changes that occur in an organisms' lifetime cannot be passed onto their offspring.
  • Charles Darwin theorised that individuals in a species show a wide range of variation. This variation is because of differences in their genes. Individuals with characteristics most suited to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce. The advantageous genes are passed onto the offspring.
  • Why was Darwin's theory not immediately accepted?
    • His theory conflicted with religious views that God had created all life on Earth
    • He did not have enough evidence at the time to convince other scientists
    • People did not understand genetics and inheritance until 50 years later
