4.5 - Co-transport + absorption of glucose in the ileum

Cards (3)

  • How to microvilli crease the rate of movement in the ileum ?
Provide a larger surface area for the insertion of carrier proteins through which diffusion, facilitated diffusion and active transport can take place
  • How does the co-transport of sodium ions and glucose/amino acid molecules occur ?
Na ions are actively transported out of ciliated epithelial cell by the NaK pump into the blood via a carrier molecule, establishes a conc. gradient between the liken of the ileum and the cell, Na ions move down the conc. gradient and bring glucose/amino acid molecules with it against their conc. gradient (through a co-transport protein), the conc. of glucose/AA builds up in the cell so moves into the blood via facilitated diffusion down its conc. gradient
  • What’s the ileum ?
    Part of the small intestine
