  • What does a vaccine contain
    A dead/inactive form of the pathogen
  • Why does the vaccine not make you feel unwell
    As the pathogen is dead + inactive
  • What happens during an immunisation
    • A dead or inactive pathogen injected into body (called vaccine)
    • Dead pathogens still have antigens so lymphocytes produce complimentary antibodies
    • Memory lymphocytes are produced during immune response
    • Șo if you're infected with live pathogen -> memory lymphocytes can rapidly produce antibodies b4 u feel sick
  • What are the advantages of immunising people against a disease
    • Prevents large outbreaks of disease (epidemic)
    • Prevents people who haven't been immunised from getting infected -> fewer people to pass it onto (herd immunity)
    • Some diseases have been wiped out completely
  • What is the disadvantage of immunisation
    • Might have a bad reaction -> very rare
    • No guarantee being immunised will prevent you from getting the disease
    • Disease spreads very quickly
    • Ethical reasons -> not everyone gets immunised
