  • defferred imitation is the ability to copy and an action that was previously observed but no longer present
  • piaget in 1962 proposed that during the sensorimotor stage - birth to the age of 2- younger children could not do the deffered imitation task
  • so a deffered imitation task was conducted in 1966
  • this study investigated wheter children could imitate one of the following condtions after 24 hours
  • in the experimental condition the experimenter removes the mitten from the puppet and shakes it ringing a bell hidden inside and repalces
  • and in the control condtion the exeprimenter shakes the puppet ringing a bell that is hidden but not inside the mitten
  • after a day the infants are shown a puppet wearing a mitten again and were given imitation points if they could remember what the experimenter did and they were given points if they could remove the mitten shake the mitten or put the mitten back on the puppet
  • the results showed higher imiation sscores for the demonstration condition
