    -had a speech impediment causing him to stammer
    -he was very shy and avoided contact with his subjects as far as possible
    -provocative with his defence of prerogative and divine right, as opposed to compromising like his father
    -he did this purposefully to be separate from his father

    - sought to defend his prerogative, but did so in a provocative manner, possibly due to his limited self-confidence
    - He was unwilling to negotiate and the nature of his court increasingly hampered dialogue with the Political nation, leading the undermining of his authority

    - Wanted it to be ordered & follow his demands> made it strict, & only contained his supporters isolating the PN
    - Court dominated by Arminans & Catholics (> at time linked to absolutists eg Spain) PN uneasy about this
    -Main form of entertainment = Masque - elaborately costumed fantasy while dancing, he & his wife took part opposed by puritans
