1.1: Michelangelo's Creation of Adam

• God and Adam both look muscular and sit in similar positions showing that humans are made in God's image
• Adam isn't fully alive and needs God's touch to bring him to life showing humanity relies on God
• God is carried by angels to show his transcendence
• Represents the moment when God makes Adam come to life. Michelangelo is showing that Adam depends on God for his life
• The hands of Adam and God reaching out to each other reflect the longing for a close relationship between God an man. It is the building up of harmonious love, knowledge, and appreciation of each other
• Portrays how dependent humanity is on God, yet at the same time shows that humanity is made in the image of God
• God and Adam are depicted as nearly the same size, suggesting that man is equal with God, which does not reflect Catholic beliefs
• Some people do not like the idea of the eternal God being shown as an old man
