1900-1950s factories

• In 1906, Austin car plant opened a factory which, at peak, employed 22,000 people
• In 1917, Dunlop tyre built a factory which employed 10,000 at peak
• As the population grew, the government built densely populated terraced housing to house the workers of these factories
