  • Conclusion - part 1
In conclusion, trench conditions such as trench foot, and disease and infection, did affect soldiers on the Western front but they were not the worst as they could be healed at the site of the battle or nearby. However, shell shock was the worst because many soldiers were told they were just scared to fight when they were really suffering with severe anxiety and stress due to the constant fear of death and explosions triggering their fight or flight responses.
  • Conclusion - part 2
This meant that the condition often could not be treated on the Western Front and soldiers would get sent to a specialist hospital such as the Craiglockhart War Hospital in Edinburgh, which is where the famous war poet Wilfred Owen was inspired for many of his pieces as he suffered from shell shock himself. Although, the specialist hospitals were not always nice places to be as soldiers felt ashamed for not being able to fight for their loved ones and country and felt helpless.
