• 5 puritan writers were sentenced to have their ears cut off due to seditious writings
• the king appointed all judges
• limits to the kings power as local JPs and sheriffs were unpaid and therefore could show their own beliefs more
• Prynne the puritan pamphleteer wrote a pamphlet attacking the queen, was branded SL and had is ears cut off. Viewed as an anti Laudian martyr
