Osmosis practical-investigation in water potential of potato

Cards (11)

  • Step 1
Prepare the 1 mol dm, 0.8 mol dm, 0.4 mol dm, 0.2 mol dm and 0 mol dm solutions
  • step 2
label 5 boiling tubes with their strength and place 20cm^3 of water/sucrose solution into the corresponding tube using a syringe
  • step 3
    create a results table
  • step 4
use the cork borer, knife and ruler to cut 5 potato chips that are 30mm long and remove the skin
  • step 5
carefully dry the potato chips using a paper towel by rolling them
  • step 6
    • use the balance to weigh the chips
    • Record its mass in the results table
  • step 7

repeat for all 5 solutions and place bungs in tubes
  • step 8
leave in tubes for at least an hour
  • step 9
remove the chips one at a time, roll in the paper towel and reweigh recording the mass in the table
  • step 10
use the start and end mass to calculate the percentage change in mass of each chip and record on the table
  • step 11
plot a graph of percentage change in mass against the concentration of sucrose solution
