transects

• • the distribution of an organism is where an organism is found
  • the distribution of an organism is affected by environmental factors
  • transects are lines which can be used to study the distribution of organisms in an area
• method:

  1. place measuring tape down straight line where you want to take transect
  2. mark every 2m along line for at least 10m away from starting position
  3. place quadrat every 2m and count number of organisms present
  4. repeat steps 1-3 at least three times
  5. calculate mean number of organisms per quadrat at each distance
  6. analyse results to determine reason for change in distribution
