  • Christmas
    a Christian celebration of the birth of Christ. It is a time for families and friends to get together to share food, and exchange gifts
  • Dickens wrote the novel before Christmas 1843, it takes place on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. It uses the ideas of generosity and compassion that we associate with Christmas to highlight the transformation of Scrooge. We see him change from a miserable man (contrasting the Christmas spirit) to a man of joy

    the novel has an unusual layout of five staves, rather then chapters - these reflect the structure of carols and links the story to the joy of singing
  • Scrooge's nephew Fred
    Fred is shown as a cherry character, he is seen celebrating, whole heartedly with his friends. He is used to show how it is sometimes good to be a child, especially at Christmas. Dickens uses Fred as the opposite of Scrooge - Fred is able to give in to his childish pleasures at Christmas and enjoy peoples company
